God Dressed Ye, Mare
a Christmas carol
Misheard 1968/12/25 (age 14), sung 1984/9/16 in a dream, and drawn 2008/6/28 as comics, by Chris Wayan
When I was little I misheard song lyrics a lot. I figured it was just me--until I discovered Walt Kelly's Pogo, a comic strip set in Okeefenokee Swamp. All the swamp critters sing this carol each Christmas:
Dig the holes with trowels, by golly--Walla Walla Wash, and Kalamazoo!
Nora's freezing on the trolley--Swaller dollar cauliflower, allez-garou! Don't we know archaic barrel--Lullaby, Lulu Boy, Louisville Lou! Trolley Molly don't love Harold--Boola Boola Pensacoola Hullabaloo... |
(Well, that was from memory, I didn't look it up. But I think it's close.)
Anyway, after reading that I didn't worry about my little inaccuracies. But it was years later, after such creative mis-hearings had been dubbed mondegreens by columnist Jon Carroll, that I recognized this as an art form. One night I even dreamed I wandered my house singing this garbled carol. But it was still many years before it occurred to me to draw how I sang God Rest Ye, Merry Gentlemen.
