THAT DAY

I walk up to Red Hill Books with my friend Alder to hear Chris Carlsson, the author of Nowtopia. His rant's interesting. He sees us all as workers; the middle class is a myth, just working folks with more toys. No more power than the poor, and stuck in largely meaningless jobs. "Even surgeons and firemen, doing undeniably useful work, must waste much of their time on paperwork and accounting--capitalist nonsense." The ruling class is tiny, insular... and clueless. And so society drifts.

It's ironic (given his topic) that he lectures too long. One-to-many transmission. How archist. I was curious who WE all are, this audience of Nowtopians. What projects are WE up to?

Like that cute brunette with the squeaky cat voice. I talk with her a little afterward, but don't try hard. Don't feel like looking for a girlfriend. Not til I know what this recurring mild fever is. Contagious? Probably not. But I don't want to spread germs...

THAT NIGHT

Herd of cats? There is no herd of cats! So the cats I must kiss with fish-breath kisses sloppywet are a collection of six individual cats. My problem isn't this non-herd of cats. It's all those tall bipeds in clothes and wits tossing in sideline ape-jibes: Ewww, think of their ass-licking! I may think but do NOT reply Ewww, humans! Think of all their ass- kissing!

• Kissing cats: It seems I wanted to kiss that girl's pussy. But despite Freud and Jung, I have that sneaky feeling that dream was also political...
• Ass-kissing: In his Nowtopia lecture, Chris Carlsson was a purist--money is dirty, avoid and ignore it. That's contradictory! You can't avoid what you ignore, and can't ignore what you're busy avoiding. Money's not dirty. Money's trivial. It's just an inaccurate, oversimplified, silly measure of energy, materials, people's passion. Try to spend time outside the money system, so you learn to ignore the money and look at what's getting done. But once you know money's just a sloppy measure, then you can live in capitalism and focus on doing real stuff.

  No, the killer vine strangling us isn't money. It's hierarchy. And while capitalism is badly infected, overthrowing it alone won't help: you can have bosses and jobs without it, indeed without money at all! Or so says my dream: the problem of our age is ass-kissing--doing what the boss says, instead of what you sense is really best. A world half paperwork, half makework, all work... ugh!

  Cats, unherdable cats, have the right idea. Fish breath and all.
