Sun Sinks Beneath the Earth--Remains of Men and Women
l997, mixed media on panel, 36 x 42", by Jenny Badger Sultan
I worked on this panel by painting very loosely, collaging papers on which I had created monoprint images, drawn images or painted textures, alternating back and forth between painting and collage. Underground images began to unfold, including the image of the black sun sinking into the earth which I had seen in the Splendor Solis, a series of alchemical paintings.
A dream referring to “the remains of men and women” brought forth some of the layers of buried imagery. I felt the dream meant both layers in time and layers in the psyche.
