Lyr (home) - map - creatures - cultures - evolution - climate - geology - gazetteer - nomenclature - definitions - building Lyr - more worlds? Planetocopia!
- FINDING ENTRIES: ignore words like "the", "Mt", "Cape"; Lake Urshi is under U, Sea of Fire under F.
- LARGE lands and seas are in CAPITALS.
- LONGITUDE on Lyr is always east, from 0 to 359. On the world map, 0 is in center, 90 center-right, 270 center-left, 180 at both edges.
- Mt Sa, 12 N, 188 E
- Mt Sa is a perfect cone much the size and shape of Fuji, 4100 m high (13,450'), in the Delp Range at the end of Cape Rodonis ( northern Holmenach, NW Diomedes region). It only bears snow occasionally during orbital winter. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Sagittarius River, 25-30 N, 2-6 E
- A river draining most of southern Corona. The Sagittarius Valley is 2400 km (1500 mi) long, and getting longer every day, as the great river chews away at the Blawsa Hills and Andromeda Range, dumping the silt in its delta on the Centauri Gulf. The long Sagittarius Valley's like the north shore of the Mediterranean; temperate and rainy in the north, warmer and drier near the south coast. (Source: People of the Wind)
- Sairn Bay, 9 N, 31 E
- a bay 250 km wide (150 mi) dividing central Lokon from its rainforested southern peninsula, Cape Moru. The north shore is open monsoon forest, very wet then very dry. To the south it grows steadily wetter. Offshore are the Kraken Is. (Source: The Sharing of Flesh)
- Mt Salmen, 4 N, 203 E
- Highest peak in the Oborch Range on the north shore of Lannach (in Diomedes).A long alpine ridge reaching 3600 m (12,000'), it forms an ecological island above the rainforest below. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Sanga Bay, 6 N, 197-201 E
- An island-studded, branching sound, 900 km (550 mi) long, separating the continent of Lannach from Dawrnach to the north. Up to 300 km wide, Sanga narrows to only 25 (15 mi) at the east end, known as Achan Strait, opening into the Achan Sea. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Sathayn, 12 N, 120 E
- One of the Hisagazi Islands (NE end of the Polesotechnic Strip). Sathayn is small, only 150 km (90 mi) long, hardly bigger than Hawaii, and low--heavily eroded ridges like Oahu, and as patchy, with tropical forest on the east shore, savanna south and north, and near-deserts on the west. A tail of scrubby islets leads south toward larger Anday. (Source: The Longest Voyage)
- SCANIA, 51-64 N, 66-76 E
- A cold continent north of Troisleons. Scania's split by Leea Sound into two mainlands: Ilrede, much like British Columbia, and barren Trollheim to the north, each about 1.25 M sq km (500,000 sq mi, nearly as big as Alaska). (Source: The Broken Sword)
- Scorpeluna Plateau, 1 N-3 S, 257-261 E
- A plateau 1500-2500 m high (5-8000'), about the size of the Ethiopian Highlands, on Equatoria, in the Gaiila Cluster. The plateau is all one basin, draining inward to the Scorpeluna River. The surrounding peaks force most rain to fall on their outer slopes, but Equatoria's in the torrid zone, where even mere leftover rain is substantial; Scorpeluna is a mild fertile upland of mixed groves and meadows. (Source: People of the Wind)
- Scorpeluna River, 1 N-3 S, 257-261E
- The river draining most of Equatoria, in the Gaiila Cluster. It's 1500 km long (900 mi) and for nearly its whole length it's a mile high, winding across the fertile Scorpeluna Plateau. (Source: People of the Wind)
- Shadow, 50 N, 175 E
- A long curving island off eastern Sherrin in the Roland Group, 450 km (270 mi) long. Shadow's heavily forested; its climate's cool but not snowy at sealevel, a bit like Vancouver Island. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
- Cape Shadow, 51 N, 170 E
- Northern tip of Sherrin, in the Roland Group. Tall conifer woods cover parallel ridges 200 km long. Like its twin Cape Dream to the south, it shelters the Gulf of Shadows. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
- Gulf of Shadows, 50 N, 170 E
- A gulf 800 x 1000 km (500 x 625 mi) across, in eastern Sherrin (in the Roland Group). The southern gulf, below Shadow Island, is more sheltered from winter storms. The region resembles Puget Sound; kelp- and oyster-beds off densely forested capes and islets. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
- Shanga Bay and Cape Shanga, 13-15 S, 199-201 E
- Driest part of T'kela, in the Diomedes Cluster. Shanga Bay takes a huge triangular bite out of southwest T'kela some 800 km wide. The shores are rocky, with dry grass and few trees. The Shanga River Basin just to the north is over 100,000 sq km of the same. Cape Shanga on the south edge of the bay is a rocky ridge 600 km long (375 mi) but as little as 50 km (30 mi) wide, all desert on its west side. Reefs continue out 1000 km to the western Boran Islands. This long straight line parallels at least three others crossing T'kela from southwest to northeast; they resemble deep-sea fracture zones, but if so, then the Kusulongo Range along the island's spine should have a spreading rift valley, and it doesn't. (Source: Trader to the Stars)
- Mt Shelgrave, 16 S, 290 E
- Highest peak in southern Gaiila, Shelgrave's a volcano 3900 m high (12,800') whose lava flows have built up Cape Sim, a rugged peninsula 1200 km long (750 mi), with a pleasant Mediterranean east coast, mild pine-wood uplands dotted with subalpine tarns, and steep red desert canyons on the west, dropping to Rhys Bay. (Source: A Midsummer Tempest)
- SHERRIN, 47-51 N, 160-175 E
- A land 2100 km (1300 mi) wide at the southwest end of the Roland Group. Sherrin has mild summers and cool but snowless winters--on the coasts at least. Glaciers cap Mt Hauch, a volcano 3200 m high (10,700'). Temperate rainforests fill the lowlands around the Gulf of Shadows; the western uplands are alpine meadows. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
- SHIELDING ISLANDS, 39-64 N, 21-62 E
- A cool northern archipelago with dozens of large islands, totaling 1,650,000 sq km (650,000 sq mi, as big as Scandinavia). The Shieldings are northeast of Corona in the Ythri Cluster. The largest lands are Fenris, Asa and Jormun, each about the size of Britain. Their lowlands are huge grassy steppes, with sparse evergreen forest in the mountains. (Source: People of the Wind)
- Shinarran, 36 S, 185 E
- One of the lesser Rorvan Islands, Shinarran's a hilly, forested egg shape 130 km (80 mi) wide, east of Ortu. The climate's rainy and warm. (Source: Question and Answer)

- A gulf 600 km (400 mi) wide on the east coast of Ulash, in the Polesotechnic Strip; the southern point is Cape Shivaru. It's the rainy side of Ulash; warm tropical forest on the coast, savanna on the uplands above the clouds, around Mt Fereghur and the Shivaru Mts. (Source: The Master Key)
- Shivaru Islands, 18-20 S, 135-145 E
- A rainforested chain in the central Polesotechnic Strip, stretching from Shivaru Bay on Ulash some 2400 km (1500 mi) east to the Wersgorix Cluster; the only flyway between them. The Shivarus are low and narrow but up to 250 km long, sheltering equally large lagoons and coral banks. (Source: The Master Key)
- Shkil, Shkil Bay, 56 S, 222-223 E
- Shkil Bay is a gulf 300 km (190 mi) on the south coast of Prasiyo, in the Ak'hai'i Cluster (south of Diomedes). The Urduga Delta's at the north end; in the south, Landomar Point and Shkil Island, 110 km long (70 mi) shelter the bay's mouth. (Source: World Without Stars)
- Shua, 7 N to 1 S, 248-253 E
- An island chain 1000 km west of Equatoria, in the Gaiila Cluster. The Shuas form the only flyway into Tyrlan to the north. Shua, the largest, is 330 km wide (210 mi); Midway is 120 km; the rest are mere islets. All are low and smothered in dense rainforest. Straddling the equator, Shua has two seasons--warm, rainy orbital winter (when Lyr's further from the sun) and hot, torrential orbital summer. The only difference is how MUCH heat and rain. (Source: People of the Wind)
- Cape Shwylt, 34 S, 30 E
- A wedge of land 500 km on a side (300 mi), jutting into deep water off the east coast of Merseia (Flandry Group). Off the tip of Cape Shwylt are the Dwyr Islands. The region is temperate rainforest. (Source: Ensign Flandry & seq.)
- Sea of Shwylt, 28-34 S, 23-31 E
- A deep sea off the east coast of Merseia (Flandry Group), sheltered on the east by the Dwyr Islands, on the west by the Ivrich Peninsula, and by the mainland on the south. Shwylt's northern edge is invisible on the surface--the Shwylt Trench, a mid-sea trench 16 km deep, of puzzling origin. (Source: Ensign Flandry & seq.)
- Siett, 15 N, 130 E
- One of the Hisagazi Islands (NE end of the Polesotechnic Strip). Siett is 220 km wide (140 mi), mostly patchy tropical forest--Siett's in a drybelt. A peninsula shelters a deep harbor on the SW side, the size of San Francisco Bay; to the east lie a few satellite islets, but Siett is otherwise isolated; the nearest land is one of the Balant Islands, 700 km NW. (Source: The Longest Voyage)
- Lake Silence, 55 S, 221 E
- Largest lake on Prasiyo, in the Ak'hai'i Cluster (south of Diomedes). Lake Silence, 120 km (75 mi) long , lies at the foot of Mt Landomar, and is the source of the Urduga River, draining all central Prasiyo. (Source: World Without Stars)
- Cape Silish, 37 S, 182 E
- The northern tip of Rorvan; a shield volcano 120 km (80 mi) across. (Source: Question and Answer)
- Cape Sim, 18 S, 290 E
- The southern tip of Gaiila, a rugged peninsula 1200 km long (750 mi), with a pleasant Mediterranean east coast, mild pine-wood uplands dotted with subalpine tarns, and steep red desert canyons on the west, dropping to Rhys Bay. Sim's a mass of lava flows from Mt Shelgrave, a volcano 3900 m high (12,800'). (Source: A Midsummer Tempest)
- Sinarru, 39-40 S, 183-185 E
- Second largest island in the Rorvans, Sinarru is 500 km long and 360 wide (300 x 210 mi). The land rises steadily to the north and drops sharply into Sinarru Sound and Volanzu Bay. High point: Mt Valakesh, a flawless Fuji-like cone 3300 meters (11,000') tall. (Source: Question and Answer)
- Sinarru Sound, 39 S, 183-185 E
- A winding channel between Rorvan and Sinarru, 600 km (400 mi) long and averaging 100 km wide. It's a spectacular passage between Mt Volanzu and Mt Valakesh, two cones rivaling Fuji. (Source: Question and Answer)
- Mt. Siravo, 30 S, 5 E
- A volcano 4300 m high (14,100') on Starkad, in the Flandry group. Siravo's part of the Janjevar Range running down the west coast. It has a few small glaciers on the south, usually masked under a heavy seasonal snowcap. Below a ring of alpine meadows, redwoodlike cloud forest covers its shoulders--the region is extremely rainy. Siravo has a twin, Mt Ferek, on the horizon 300 km west. (Source: Ensign Flandry)
- Skald, 61 N, 26 E
- Smallest of the Three Norns, in the Shielding Islands north of Corona, in the Ythri Region. Skald's a low, windswept, treeless prairie 200 km across (140 mi). (Source: The Broken Sword? No, not "Oh, My Goddess!")
- Sketulo, 12 S, 73 E
- The central island of a small archipelago between Larsum and the Kraoka Islands, in the Polesotechnic Strip. Sketulo's low hills and ridges are a patchwork of groves and dry grassland, looking almost Mediterranean. It's a good 180 km (110 mi) long and half as wide. (Source: Three-Cornered Wheel)
- Skontar Lakes, Mt Skontar, 2-4 S, 283-285 E

- Lake Skorrogan, 2 S, 283 E
- One of the upland Skontar Lakes in the northern Valeria Range in Gaiila. Narrow but 120 km long (75 mi), Skorrogan is fully 2500 meters high (8000'); peaks around it rise past 3 km (10,000'). Mixed forest and meadows. (Source: The Helping Hand)
- Skua, 36 S, 300 E
- An island 560 km across (350 mi), in the western Nyanza Archipelago (Flandry Cluster). The warm wet climate sustains lush temperate rainforests. It's on the edge of a mid-ocean archipelago, so you'd expect biological and cultural isolation and backwardness. Wrong! It's a vital link in the only flyway from the Flandry Cluster (one of the world's larger landmasses) to the rest of the planet, via the Nadi Chain to Carnoi in the Gaiila Cluster. (Source: The Game of Glory)
- Smeth R., Mt Smeth, 59 S, 231-233E
- Longest river in western Valland, in the Ak'hai'i Cluster (south of Diomedes). The Smeth runs 320 km (200 mi) west from Mt Smeth (3100 m, 10,200') to the sea near Cape Bren. The uplands have scattered trees, but the lowlands are bare, open prairie. (Source: World Without Stars)
- Snarfon Peninsula, 6 S, 59 E
- A peninsula 400 km (250 mi) long, reaching west from Quillipup, in the Kraoka Islands (west end of the Polesotechnic Strip). Volcanic Mt Snarfon is only linked by a narrow lava flow to Quillipup. If the neck erodes, Snarfon will be one of the larger islands in the Kraokas. Just to the west and much the same size is the isle of Roxlatl. (Source: A Sun Invisible)
- Sorrow Reefs, 35-39 S, 306-313 E
- A group of islets in the Nyanza Archipelago (western Flandry Cluster). None of the Sorrows are over 20 km wide (13 mi) or 50 m high (160 feet), though some are 100-200 km long (60-125 mi). They look like coral atolls, and their reefs are (as the name suggests) extensive, sprawling over 1600 km (1000 mi); but they're kelp forest, not tropical corals. They're wooded down to the tideline. The Sorrows have a twin archipelago 600 km to the south: the Iron Shoals. (Source: The Game of Glory)
- Sorya Desert, 14-16 N, 245-247 E
- The desert coast west of the Kith Range on Tyrlan (northwestern Gaiila Cluster). The strip is over 600 km long but barely 100 wide (400 by 60 mi). Despite the name, much of it is dry veldt not true desert, and short streams descend to the sea every few miles.(Source: The Horn of Time the Hunter)
- Mt Sorya, 15 N, 245 E
- Highest peak in the Kith Range on Tyrlan (northwestern Gaiila Cluster). Mt Sorya is 4200 m (13,700') high. (Source: The Horn of Time the Hunter)
- South Sea Islands, 44-82 S, various longitudes

- A shallow bay (for Lyr; up to 2500 m deep) some 1800 km long (1200 mi), off southern Kilnu (Diomedes Cluster). Warm and sheltered by Cape Trekkan, the Hunlu Peninsula and an island arc, Srygen Sound has spectacular coral reefs. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Mt Srygen, 8 S, 190 E
- Highest peak in southern Kilnu (Diomedes region), volcanic Mt Srygen's 3100 m high (10,300'). Its grassy western slopes are in a rainshadow--about the only break in the rainforest covering Kilnu. To the south is Cape Trekkan, part of the same ridge. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Starhaven Is., 48-52 N, 220-243 E
- two dozen islands along Carheddin's north coast, in the Roland Group. Starhaven proper, the largest, in the middle of the chain, is a narrow low wooded isle 250 km (150 mi) long. - Mt Stepha, Stepha Peninsula, 15 S, 109-113 E
- Northeast Ikrananka is called the Stepha Peninsula. 1600 km (1000 mi) long, its north coast is wet; the south's much drier, mostly veldt. Mt Stepha, over 4000 m (13,000'), is ringed by ecozones, from warm lowland forest to cool cloud forests and meadows on Stepha's shoulders. The Stepha River Valley on the east is particularly lush; the uplands just west of Stepha are sparse pinewoods and high desert, in a rainshadow. (Source: The Trouble Twisters)
- Storbo, 60 N, 38 E
- One of the Shielding Islands in the Ythri Cluster northeast of Corona. Storbo's just 30 km/20 mi east of Fenris, in the far north. A wide, low, windswept, treeless prairie 450 km across (280 mi). (Source: uncertain; Nordic?)
- Mt Stormgate, 28 N, 5 E
- Southernmost peak of the Andromeda Range, on Corona, in Ythri. Stormgate looms 4000 m (13,200') over the subtropical shore of Hloch Bay. (Source: Earth Book of Stormgate)

- Summer Isles, 3 N - 2 S, 285-295 E
- An archipelago north of Gaiila, the Summers sprawl over 2400 km (1500 mi). The largest is Oberon, 1000 km across; Titania and Puck are each 800 or more. All are lush equatorial rainforest, and most are low, though volcanic Herne is a Hawaiian-style volcano rising to 3100 m (10,300'). The Summer Isles are a flyway to Oronesia and the northern hemisphere.(Source: A Midsummer Tempest)
- Sun Atolls, 5-8 S, 65 E
- Smallest of the equatorial Kraoka Islands (in the western Polesotechnic Strip), the Suns are also the lowest--most are mere reef-capped seamounts now, though once they were towering volcanoes like Jutta or Trrl. Only coral islets survive along the rim, just a few dozen yards high, a few miles wide... though one is 200 km long, and the whole chain sprawls 2000 km. If the Bahamas were built on dead volcanoes... (Source: A Sun Invisible)
- Sundhadarta Range, 16-22 S, 108 E
- The spine of Ikrananka, this north-south range is 2500 km long, with peaks 3 km high (2 mi); Mt Gundra reaches 4100 m (13,500'). The east slopes are forested. The west is rainshadowed--dry veldt in the south on Rangakora and the Zatlach Desert in the north. (Source: The Trouble Twisters)

- Swan Is., 25-31 N, 92-98 E
- 22 islands off southeast Troisleons; the largest are Arroy, Alianora and May, each around 300 km (200 mi) long. All the Swans are rainy, green, and warmer than most of Troisleons. The loneliest yet most important of the Swans is Tarou in the far southeast, the only stepping-stone across the Alianora Sea to the continents of the Polesotechnic Strip. (Source: Three Hearts and Three Lions)
- Swan Plains, Swan River, Swan Range, 30-33 N, 90-93 E
- Fertile Swan Plain in southeast Troisleons is 800 km (500 mi) wide--one of the largest flatlands on a rugged, active world. It's drained by the Swan River, a slow, winding, manybranched stream arising in the Swan Range to the west, rising 2500 m (8200'), part of the Tarnberg and Jotun mountain complex. The plain runs north to Lourville Bay. (Source: Three Hearts and Three Lions)
- Syranax River, 4-7 N, 187-191 E
- The Syranax is the longest river in Holmenach (Diomedes region), rising on Mt Urnan in the Delp Range and flowing 1000 km (625 mi) southeast to the Drakho Sea; the Syranax Valley is a huge, unbroken rainforest. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Szili, 18 S, 178 E
- A tropical island in the Kyrie Archipelago off southern Kilnu in the Diomedes Cluster. Szili rises in the south-central part of the chain. It's 80 km across (50 mi); an old shield volcano eroded into low hills, with a halo of reefs and islets. The climate's a bit drier than Hawaii, almost Mediterranean. Szili is lower and drier than most of the Kyries, since no high peaks snag rainclouds. Its nearest neighbor is Maznunder. (Source: The Martyr)
