Lyr (home) - map - creatures - cultures - evolution - climate - geology - gazetteer - nomenclature - definitions - building Lyr - more worlds? Planetocopia!
- FINDING ENTRIES: ignore words like "the", "Mt", "Cape"; Lake Urshi is under U, Sea of Fire under F.
- LARGE lands and seas are in CAPITALS.
- LONGITUDE on Lyr is always east, from 0 to 359. On the world map, 0 is in center, 90 center-right, 270 center-left, 180 at both edges.
- Lake Nada, 67 S, 289 E
- Largest lake on Tauno, in the antarctic Averorn Islands. A shallow splotch 200 km (125 mi) across, freezing over most winters. The shores are boggy forests (quite Alaskan), and then wide rolling steppes on the lower slopes of Mt Tauno to the north and Mt Nada to the east. (Source: The Merman's Children)
- Cape Nadi, Nadi Is., 24 S, 249-251 E
- The southern tip of Carnoi, in the Gaiila Cluster. The land is Mediterranean, with fields and groves dependent on winter rains. To the west of the chunky, squarish, 200-km peninsula is Nadi Bay, with three large (80-150 km long) islands; scattered reefs, seamounts and islets curve west in an island arc for thousands of kilometers, to the Boran Islands in the Diomedes region. Tenuous and difficult though it is, it's about the only flyway to Diomedes. (Source: Lodestar)
- Mt Nadia, 44 S, 219 E
- Highest peak on Ak'hai'i (south of the Diomedes region), 3900 m high (12,800'). Part of the Gneiss Range. (Source: Strangers)
- Nagrim, 44 N, 190 E
- an island just off the southern tip of Roland, 500 km long, studded with small volcanoes, covered in temperate rain forest. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
- Mt. Narpa, 26 S, 10 E
- Highest peak on Starkad, in the Flandry group. Mt Narpa's 4700 m high (15,400'). A volcano with a large caldera, it's clearly been even higher and blown itself apart--repeatedly. Narpa rises at the northeast end of the Janjevar Range; its massive lava flows have built up a broad, rainy subtropical highland 2-3 km high (6600-10,000'). (Source: Ensign Flandry)
- Nat, 37 N, 339 E
- One of the Hesperian Isles, off Corona in western Ythri. Nat is 300 km (190 mi) long, covered by lush temperate rainforest. (Source: Earth Book of Stormgate)
- Neri River, 13-17 N, 246 E
- the largest river on Tyrlan (northwestern Gaiila Cluster). The river's only 500 km long but has many branches winding through the open subtropical woods filling the Neri Basin. (Source: The Horn of Time the Hunter)
- Ness Bay, 8-11 N, 188 E
- A squarish bite 500 km across taken out the north coast of Holmenach (Diomedes region). It's quite deep--clearly a geological response to the young, high Delp Mts just to the west, but whether it's a dropped fault-block like Earth's Death Valley is uncertain. The shores are rugged and look rather Mediterranean, with open groves on the hills and bluffs. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- Ngi Is., Cape Ngi, 41 S, 219 E
- Three islands up to 140 km (90 mi) long, off Cape Ngi, a 100-km point on the north shore of Ak'hai'i (south of the Diomedes region); cape and isles are small, but about the only interruptions to this long, straight, rainy coast. (Source: Strangers)
- Nicor, 45 N, 170 E
- Nicor is a low, rolling patch of temperate forest like a snippet of coastal Oregon 150 km (90 mi) across. Nicor is in the Roland Group, south of Sherrin. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
- Niels Bay and Cape, 70 S, 236-239 E
- A bay on the west shore of Eyjan, in the antarctic Averorn Islands. Cape Als shelters the bay to the south, Als Island to the west, and Cape Niels to the north. Each cape is a rough triangle 450 km on a side (280 mi). They look Alaskan; the uplands are cold steppes (not true tundra--no permafrost, since Lyr's had no recent Ice Age). The lowlands are like the bizarre, mossy, cold rainforests ("sleetforests"?) of Patagonian Chile or the Queen Charlotte Islands off BC. Low, slow-growing, twisted, moss-bearded, dense, a lurid green, looking profoundly alien. They survive because the Averorn Islands are in a polar wet zone, a belt nonexistent on Earth (see CLIMATE BELTS). (Source: The Merman's Children)
- Niels Islands, 68-70 S, 236-239 E
- These islands trail off 600 km (400 mi) north from Cape Niels on Eyjan, in the antarctic Averorn Islands. None of them is over 80 km (50 mi) across.
- Nightflier Is., 3 S to 7 N, 309-314 E
- This cluster of equatorial volcanic islands form the heart of the Quenna Archipelago, a broad, complex rise (future continent?) that links the Gaiila Cluster to Oronesia. To the west lie the low Hriccal Islands; to the north and east, the larger, drier Fairwind Group. Nightflier proper is a diamond-shaped island fully 320 km across (200 mi), with a central volcano 2600 m high (8500'). Five more isles, mostly in the C-shaped central group, are Hawaiian in scale; a halo of lesser isles sprawls across 2000 km of shallow sea. Exuberant tropical rainforest covers even the smallest. (Source: People of the Wind)
- Nikum Bay, Cape Nikum, 21 N, 111 E
- A wedge-shaped bay on the southwest coast of Erkila in the Hisagazi Archipelago (NE end of the Polesotechnic Strip). Nikum is a shallow island-dotted gulf 160 km across (100 mi); Cape Nikum shelters it to the west, longer Cape Nira to the east. The shores are steep, often cliffs, with many heads and bays, and scattered groves of trees. It looks quite Greek. (Source: The Longest Voyage)
- Nira Bay, Nira R., 22-23 N, 121-113 E
- The Nira River, on Erkila, flows from central Mt Ulas southeast 370 km (230 mi), into Nira Bay, a shallow coral sound 400 km wide. The upper Nira is subalpine; the coast, open subtropical forest. (Source: The Longest Voyage)
- Cape Nira, Nira Is., 21-23 N, 112-114 E
- Cape Nira, on Erkila, is a ragged hand groping 240 km (150 mi) southeast, dividing Nikum Bay to the west from Nira Bay to the east; the four Nira Islands, up to 70 km (45 mi) long, dot the bay. Cape and islands are warm, wooded, and rugged, with coral reefs offshore. (Source: The Longest Voyage) (Source: The Longest Voyage)
- The Norns, 60 N, 22-28 E
- The three westernmost Shielding Islands, in the Ythri Region north of Corona. Verdandi, Urd and Skald are all wide, low, windswept, treeless prairies 2-300 km across (120-200 mi). (Source: The Broken Sword)
- Nua, 9 S, 193-4 E
- A low, narrow crescent of rainforest 320 km (200 mi) long, south of the Hunlu Peninsula on Kilnu, in the Diomedes Cluster. Nua is a remnant of an eroded landbridge between Kilnu and T'kela to the southeast. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
- NYANZA ISLANDS, 35-48 S, 300-333 E
- An archipelago sprawled across 6000 km in the Flandry Ocean, far west of Besar. The largest islands are Aquant and Altla, each as big as Britain. The chain is the sole flyway to the Flandy cluster from the rest of the world. (Source: The Game of Glory)
- NYANZA SEA, 25-55S, 290-345 E
- A southern temperate ocean around the Nyanza Archipelago, about the size of the Pacific. It's often considered a western extension of the Flandry Ocean--logical for land-based geographers, since the Nyanzas are culturally and biologically linked to the Flandry Cluster of continents by a flyway (from Tessa to the Luang Islands) but ironic for oceanographers, as the Nyanza "sea" is larger than the Flandry "ocean" it's supposedly a part of--the tail that wags the dog! Oh, well--in sheer volume of water, the deeper Flandry half is probably a bit larger. This Greater Flandry Ocean is larger than the Atlantic and Pacific combined.

- Cape Nyaronga, 7 S, 204 E
- The northern tip of T'kela (Diomedes region). A wedge about 400 km long, Nyaronga is the wettest part of the island, with monsoon-forested mountains up to 2 km high (6600'). (Source: Trader to the Stars)
- Nyesslan, 42 N, 272 E
- An old volcanic island sheltering Draun Bay northeast of Li in Oronesia. Kite-shaped Nyesslan is about 430 km long (270 mi)--a cluster of shield volcanoes eroded into steep fluted ridges less than a kilometer high, cradling a central lake. Rainforest covers all, even the steepest slopes. (Source: People of the Wind)
