Katandara, 14-18 S, 95-108 E

A tropical land in the central Polesotechnic Strip, Katandara is a teardrop shape 1200 km long (750 mi) between Larsum and Ikrananka. Most of Katandara's a warm grassy plateau with scattered woods, drained by central Lake Urshi. The blunt western tip is Cape Larreka; the eastern tip, Cape Arnanak. Kennin Is., 60 S, 300 E

A group in the antarctic Averorn Islands, the Kennins include six islands over 100 km across, but by far the largest is Kennin proper, 850 km long (530 mi), bigger than Newfoundland, with a similar ice-capped spine of 2500-meter (8000') peaks. Kennin's lowlands, though, look more like the bizarre, mossy, subarctic rainforests ("sleetforests"?) of Patagonian Chile or the Queen Charlotte Islands off BC. The endless cold rain- and sleet-storms create dense boggy woods in sheltered valleys as far as the south coast--at latitude 73 S! Low, slow-growing, twisted, moss-bearded, dense, a lurid green, looking profoundly alien, they survive because the southern Averorn Islands are in a polar wet zone, a belt nonexistent on Earth (see CLIMATE BELTS). Keshchyi, 33 N, 338-341E

The southernmost of the Hesperian Isles, off Corona in western Ythri. Keshchyi's large, 550 km (350 mi) long and half as wide, covered by lush, mossy subtropical rainforest. (Keshchyi is technically just within Lyr's tropic zone, but it's cooler than Earth's, and much wider--up to 36 degrees north and south. While mild, even warm, it's hardly what we'd call tropical.) Mt Ketjil, 38 S, 351 E

Named for the redwood-like trees found on its slopes, volcanic Mt Ketjil is the highest peak in central Besar, in the Flandry Cluster. Its summit is 3300 m (11,000'). (Source: The Plague of Masters)

Khrau Is., 3-6 S, 261-264 E

Five tropical islands between Equatoria and Quetlan (Gaiila Cluster), all under 250 km wide except Khrau itself, fully 700 km long (450 mi)--it's a complex of steep ridges mantled in rainforest, like the wet side of a Hawaiian island--but on all sides, for Khrau's in a stormbelt. KILNU, 1-12 S, 187-197 E

A tropical land in the Diomedes Region, south of Lannach. Kilnu's shaped like a spidery running man 2900 km (1800 mi) long, twice the size of Madagascar, with a mountainous western spine (Mt Kilnu reaches 4400 m or 14,400') and a series of gulfs breaking up the east, like Guntra Bay and Srygen Sound. Cape Kiluo, Mt Kiluo, Kiluo Desert, 46-48 S, 211-213 E

The southern tip of Ak'hai'i (south of the Diomedes region). The cape is 500 km long and averages 200 wide (320 by 130 mi). Much of it's a plateau over 2 km high (7000') centered on Mt Kiluo, 3600 m (11,900'). The plateau is alpine; the east coast, dense forest; but the western tip, in the rainshadow of the uplands, is a narrow desert strip 250 km long. (Source: Strangers)

Kimraig Strait, 34-37 S, 352-360 E

A strait 1100 km wide (700 mi) between Besar and Starkad in the Flandry Cluster. The island of Kimraig, 350 km off Starkad, forms a rest stop for fliers, making the passage easy (by Lyran standards). (Source: Ensign Flandry)

Kith Range, 12-18 N, 245 E

A north-south range running 900 km (550 mi) down the spine of Tyrlan, in the Gaiila Cluster. Highest peak: Mt Sorya, 4200 m (13,800'). The east slope is forested and drops to the fertile Neri Valley, but the west is desert. (Source: The Horn of Time the Hunter)

Kochihir, 17 S, 132 E

A volcanic island off northern Ulash, in the eastern Polesotechnic Strip, Kochihir is 210 km wide (135 mi); its central peak is 2200 m high (7300'). Two lesser cones create Cape Kochihir on the mainland, 220 km long (140 mi), nearly reaching the island. (Source: The Master Key)

Kossaluth, 65 S, 97-98 E

Northernmost and warmest of the Borthu Islands in the far south seas. Still a windswept lonely place 1000 mi/1500 km from even its Borthuvian neighbors, Kossaluth is 220 km/140 mi long, narrow and cut by deep valleys and fjords. Boreal forest fills the valleys, but exposed slopes are grassy. Light snow falls, some winters--rare on Lyr at sea level. (Source: Margin of Profit)

Kraal, 42-43 S, 308-310 E

A slender island 400 km long (250 mi), in the Nyanza Archipelago (Flandry Cluster). Fertile and temperate, rather like New Zealand: open forests and meadows. It's over 1000 km from land of any size; you'd expect biological and cultural isolation and backwardness. Wrong! It's a vital link in the only flyway from the Flandry Cluster (one of the world's larger landmasses) to the rest of the planet. (Source: The Game of Glory)

Kraken Is., 0-8 N, 32-36 E

The south end of the Fiery Islands. Kraken, by far the biggest, 190 km across (120 mi), is off Cape Moru in south Lokon. The chain trails off to mere specks to the southeast; but these low atolls matter--they're the only flyway from the Ythri Region to the Polesotechnic Strip. So close to the equator, even the smallest isle is wall-to-wall jungle, offering rest, food and fresh water for fliers. (Source: The Sharing of Flesh)

Cape Krakna, 1 S, 193 E

The northern tip of Kilnu (southern Diomedes region). This peninsula 600 km long and 200 wide (400 mi by 130 mi) is rainforest from mountaintops down to the beach. 700 km (450 mi) off its tip is the Isle of Krakna, largest in the Drakho Sea. (Source: The Man Who Counts)

KRAOKA ISLANDS and Kraoka Sea, 0-10 S, 55-69 E

An equatorial archipelago the size of Borneo, in the Polesotechnic Strip. Dzua and Jutta are each as big as Britain; Quillipup, like Java; Trrl and Roxlatl, Ireland. All twenty isles are volcanic, rugged, rainy, and lush. Islets create flyways to Larsum, 4000 km east, and northwest to the equally distant Lokon in the Ythri Group; though these flyways are long, they're busy--the Kraokas are the gateway to the whole Polesotechnic region. Mt Kromand, 12 S, 286 E

Mt Kruath, Kruath Island, 40 N, 257 E

A cloud-wreathed shield volcano in west-central Li (in Oronesia). The highest point of Mt Kruath's long caldera rim is 3800 m high (12,500'). Gryphons herd and hunt on the subalpine meadows of its broad cool shoulders. Below is a ring of cloud forest, and then lush subtropical rainforest. Kruath Island, southeast of the mountain, is a satellite shield volcano forming an island 290 km (180 mi) wide. Two central peaks over 2000 m high reach into the cloud-forest zone; the bulk is mild, lush rainforest. (Source: People of the Wind)

Cape Ktiya, 40 S, 211 E

Kurro Desert and River, 18 S, 81-83 E

Western Larsum is dry; under the Sun's Way Range lies a narrow strip of true desert. It has oases--branches of the Kurro River descend from the range across the desert. Nearer the west coast, the Kurro Basin becomes dry, golden veldt. (Source: Three-Cornered Wheel)

Kursoviki Is., 27-31 S, 355-4 E

A chain of coral atolls and islets like Earth's Great Barrier Reef, sprawling across 2400 km (1500 mi) of shallow sea west of Starkad, in the Flandry group. The Kursovikis mark the edge of the continental shelf. Its coral islets are up to 160 km long but never more than 15 km wide (100 by 10 miles). (Source: Ensign Flandry)

Kusalu Islands, Kusalu Trench, 18 S, 209-221 E

The easternmost group of the scattered Boran Islands (southeast Diomedes). East and West Kusalu are each around 260 km (160 mi) long and half as wide. From them, islets and atolls lead 3000 km east along an island arc following the Kusalu Trench (southern edge of the Ikt'hanis Ocean), past a 2500-km gap (1600 mi) that must be flown nonstop, to the Nadi Islands, then 1500 km to the mainland of Carnoi in the Gaiila Region. And this is the shortest flyway linking Diomedes to the rest of the planet! It's all the more grueling because the Kusalus are in a drybelt; rain is light and scarce. Many fliers take an even longer southern route through Rorvan, Ak'hai'i and Trillia, where at least drinking water's reliable on the way. (Source: Trader to the Stars)

Mt Kusulongo, 11 S, 202 E

Highest peak on T'kela (Diomedes Cluster), Kusulongo is 3700 m (12,100') high. Lakes at its feet give rise to the two longest rivers on T'kela, the Mirzabad and Lubambaru. (Source: Trader to the Stars)

Kyrie Islands, 12-22 S, 170-180 E

A volcanic archipelago 750 km west of the Ro Islands off southern Kilnu in the Diomedes Cluster. Kyrie itself is 300 km (190 mi) long and half as wide, with a Mediterranean climate; Cibarra, 1300 km (800 mi) south, is nearly as large, and six more rival Hawai: Flame, Maznunder, Auriga, Eloise, Szili, and Waggoner. The Kyries anchor the only possible flyway between the Diomedes and Polesotechnic Regions; from West Isle, it's a dangerous flight of 4340 km (2880 mi) to Torgelta in the Wersgorix Group.
