Dageram Peninsula, 284 S, 18 E
A low, gently rolling patch of savanna, 900 km wide (550 mi), off southern Gaiila--nearly an island. The contrast with high, rugged Cape Sim across Rhys Bay could not be more extreme. (Source: A Midsummer Tempest)
DAHIA ISLANDS, 44-52 S, 101-112 E
A lonely South Sea archipelago of twenty islands, far south of Larsum. The largest is Elassi, 370 km long and 200 wide (230 by 130 mi). The isles are windy, cool and rather dry; no trees; just grassy hills. Maritime steppes! Earth has few equivalents--maybe Patagonia or the Malvinas. The northernmost of the Dahias, Wola, is the most fertile, since it's partly outside the drybelt. (Source: Season of Forgiveness)
DAHIA OCEAN, 25-65 S, 110-180 E
A deep, islandless southern ocean, southeast of the Polesotechnic Strip, east of the Dahia Archipelago, west of the Rorvans and Ak'hai'i, and north of Borthu. The Dahia Ocean's roughly the area of the Pacific, but much larger in volume. (Source: Season of Forgiveness)
Lake Dalton, 2 S, 284 E
One of the Skontar Lakes in the northern Valeria Range of Gaiila. Dalton is 80 km wide (50 mi), and a mile high (1600 m). To the east is Lake Vahino, 150 km wide (95 mi), and to the west, narrow Lake Skorrogan, 120 km long (75 mi). To the south is Mt Valthak, 3100 m (10,200') high. (Source: The Helping Hand)
SEA OF DARKNESS, 66-90 N, 0-360 E
The north polar sea, as large as the Pacific, with no land at all--and thus, no base for glaciation. A polar iceshelf does form in the long dark winter, 5-6000 km wide. But it's only a meter thick, and it melts entirely in Lyr's equally long summer. No icebergs--only a little scattered pack ice (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
DATHYNA, 12 N to 20 S, 0-30 E
A huge reef complex, 8000 km across. On Earth, Dathyna would be a large continent; but on Lyr, only its NW tip surfaces as the Ayan Islands. Dathyna's densely settled by a marine people, hexanauts, and is much used by a second, nomadic star-nosed dolphins. Dathyna lies in the Sea of Fire between the Ayans, Starkad in the Flandry Cluster, and Lokon, in Ythri. (Source: People of the Wind)
DAWRNACH, 7-11 N, 199-206 E
A terra 2200 km long and 5-800 wide (1400 by 3-500 mi, twice the size of Madagascar). Dawrnach is north of Lannach, in the Diomedes region. The south is lush rainforest, the north more open. All Dawrnach is warm except the highlands around Mt Ulwen. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
Dee River, Lake, Mt., 4-7 S, 290 E
A many-branched river 1300 km (800 mi) long, the Dee drains most of eastern Gaiila--a low, swampy rainforested basin between Mt Alayne and the Valeria Range. Mile-high Lake Dee, 120 km long and half as wide (80 by 40 miles), is on the westernmost tributary, at the foot of Mt Dee, a 3300-m volcano (11,100'). (Source: A Midsummer Tempest)
Delp Mts, 2-10 N, 188 E
The spine of Holmenach (western Diomedes), this dramatic range rises from deep sea in a north-south front some 4000 km (2400 mi) long; Mt Delp, nearly straddling the equator, is 4600 m (15,100') high. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
DHANGODHAN Range, 28-39 S, 15-32 E
The spine of Merseia, in the Flandry Cluster, the Dhangodhans are 4000 km (2500 mi) long. The lower northern half forms narrow Ivrich Peninsula; the high southern half, culminating in Mts Ardaig and Tridaig (around 4600 m / 15,000'), cups the wide Oiss Basin, Merseia's heart. "Dhangodhan" looks formidable but is quite a gentle word: roughly "thong-a-thon" with voiced ths, like "than". (Source: Ensign Flandry & seq.)
Diell, 30 N, 113 E
North end of the Hisagazi Islands (NE Polesotechnic Strip), unless you count lonely Tarou, 1500 km west, possibly part of the Swan Islands off Troisleons. Diell's a rectangular chunk of open subtropical forest 220 km long (140 mi). It's much more lush than Tarou, though they're in the same rainbelt--Tarou's on a major flyway, and is overhunted and overgrazed by tired travelers, while few outsiders visit Diell, leaving it relatively pristine. (Source: The Longest Voyage)
DIOMEDEAN GROUP, 12 N-20 S, 185-210 E
Probably the largest continental cluster in the world, totaling 17.2 million sq km (6.8 million sq mi). The main continent is Lannach, linked by an isthmus to Holmenach; together they total 10 M sq km (4 M sq mi); the main satellites are Kilnu, T'kela and Dawrnach. The Diomedes cluster is biologically quite isolated; flyways do run north to Roland and east to Ak'hai'i and Gaiila, but they're long and grueling. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
Mt Djuanda, 36 S, 351 E
A volcano 3 km high (10,000') northern Besar, in the Flandry Cluster. Djuanda's the east end of a highland stretching past Mt Utara. (Source: The Plague of Masters)
Djugaz and Djugaz Sound, 35-36 S, 182-183 E
Djugaz Sound, in the Rorvan Islands, is a shallow gulf about 400 km wide between Ortu, Omanyi and Djugaz Island, itself about 230 km (140 mi) long. (Source: Question and Answer)
Donli Bay, Donli Is., 13-15 N, 30 E
A bay cutting 600 km (375 mi) into northern Lokon, in the Fiery Islands. The thirteen Donli Islands sprawl for 1000 km east and north of its mouth; the largest are 160 km (100 mi) across. Islands and coast have a dry Mediterranean climate; the highlands of Cape Fiell west of the bay are greener. (Source: The Sharing of Flesh)
Dorova, 1 S, 142 E
A low, rainforested island, full of swampy bays and capes, just north of Wersgorix (eastern Polesotechnic Strip). Dorova's 250 km long and half as wide (160 by 80 mi). The shallow sea around it is often called the Dorova Strait, between Stulurax to the north and Wersgorix. (Source: The High Crusade)
Dragoika Peninsula and Mt Dragoika, 33-35 S, 358 E
The southwest tip of Starkad, in the Flandry group. A rugged cape 1000 km long and 4-500 wide (625 by 250-300 mi), Cape Dragoika is temperate rainforest with a few subalpine meadows on Mt Dragoika, a volcano 2200 m (7300') high, near its tip. It shelters Golden Bay to the east; to the west is Kimraig Strait between Starkad and Besar. (Source: Ensign Flandry)
DRAKHO SEA, 7 N-2 S, 190-201E
The central sea of the Diomedes Region; the only sea on Lyr that comes even close to being landlocked. Twice the size of the Mediterranean, but equatorial--more like the Caribbean. To the north is Lannach, to the west, Holmenach, to the south Kilnu. The largest island, near the center, is Krakna, 350 km (220 mi) wide, but Dwarn is nearly as big. All Drakho's shores are rainforest. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
Draun, 42 N, 267 E
A volcanic island off Li, in Oronesia, some 700 km (450 mi) long and nearly as wide. The land is warm and rainforested. (Source: People of the Wind)
Draun Bay, 41 N, 270 E
An island-studded sound east of Li, in Oronesia, 1000 km (625 mi) long and about 400 wide. Its shores--Draun Island, the Choth Peninsula--are exuberant subtropical rainforest. (Source: People of the Wind)
Cape Dream, Dream Bay, 49 N, 175 E
Eastern tip of Sherrin in the Roland Group, Cape Dream is narrow but 1000 km (625 mi) long--a densely forested arm sheltering Dream Bay, the inner/southern half of the Gulf of Shadows. The region resembles Puget Sound. (Source: The Queen of Air and Darkness)
Driss Is., 10 N-1 S, 211-214 E
17 tropical islands off the east shore of Lannach. Driss proper, by far the largest, is 500 km (300 mi) long, with four volcanic cones rising 3-4 km from the sea (highest: Mt Memnis, 4500 m/14,800'). The whole Driss chain rises sharply from deep water; were the range on land, it'd be spectacular, with scarps up to 2 km (6600') high. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
Duna Hills, Duna Isthmus, 8 N, 193-199 E
A neck of low hills 15-1800 km long (1000+ mi), linking the continent of Lannach to the Holmenach subcontinent. Duna's a strip of tropical rainforest, but it's no Panama--the narrow west end is still 270 km (170 mi) across. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
Durindal, 48 N, 78-80 E
is a slender island 640 km (400 mi) long, between Troisleons and Scania to the north. Temperate and wooded, thinning to high meadows around volcanic Mt Durindal, 3200 m high (10,700'), which sports a few glaciers. (Source: Three Hearts and Three Lions)
Cape Dwarn, 3 S, 197 E
The eastern tip of Kilnu (Diomedes region) , Dwarn is a triangular peninsula 800 km on a side (500 mi) covered in lowland rainforest. The Isle of Dwarn, 200 km to the north, is a slender sliver of jungle 250 km (160 mi) long, though only 50 wide. (Source: The Man Who Counts)
Dwyr Bay, Dwyr River, 35 S, 30 E
A triangular bay 600 km on a side (400 mi) on the east coast of Merseia in the Flandry Cluster. On its north is Cape Shwylt; off its tip, the Dwyr Islands run into deep sea. The steep Dwyr River runs 500 km (320 mi) from Mt Ardaig down to the head of the bay. (Source: Ensign Flandry & seq.)
Dwyr Is., 28-34 S, 30-33 E
A chain of 15 islands winding 1500 km (1000 mi) into the Sea of Shwylt off Merseia (Flandry Cluster). The largest, Dwyr, is 300 km/180 mi long. All the islands rise from deep water. Were Lyr's sea level Earthlike, they'd be a spectacular, jagged range. The Dwyrs seem to be the west edge of a mini-plate under the Sea of Shwylt, but these triangular, tilted wedges in a scalloped, twisting line look more like turbulence in smoke or laminar flow on Jupiter--just turbulence written in stone! Even the visible parts are dramatic: Runei in the north rears to 3000 m (9900'). (Source: Ensign Flandry & seq.)
Dzangiz Is., 36 S, 179 E
The west end of the Rorvan Islands. Dzangiz itself, the largest, is 120 km (80 mi) across. The islands are wooded, rainy and warm. (Source: Question and Answer)
Dzua, 5-8 S, 55-57 E
The largest of the Kraoka Islands (in the Polesotechnic Strip), Dzua is a rough oval 800 km (500 mi) long. Dzua's mostly tropical highlands--Mt Antoran reaches 3500 meters (11,600'), and Mt Garstang, 3100 (10,200'). Due to its oval orbit, Lyr has seasons even here on the equator. Snow falls, to melt later; instead of the freeze-dried summit deserts seen on Terran equatorial peaks like Mauna Kea, fern-meadows cling to the peaks. The broader highlands are cloud forest; lowlands are dense jungle. (Source: A Sun Invisible)
