It's Love Day--the new national holiday dedicated to love. You get to kiss and touch strangers in public. It's okay to ask ANYONE out. You can say no, of course, but it's considered inexcusable to mock or tease anyone for asking, no matter how pathetic their come-on may be...

I'm in a Boston bar, called CHEERS. Yeah, the one made famous on TV. Carla the waitress has found a man. They were getting married, broke up, but have now recommitted. Hugging and kissing. Diane, the other waitress, gives them both a warm hug. He opens his eyes and looks into hers and squeezes her and his face inches forward and kisses Diane, with Carla a bit to the side but squeezed between them. And Diane responds. Intense passion! Oh, they try to make it seem just the day's effects (everyone's horny on Love Day) but it's not. They are going to fuck, if they can keep Carla from killing them. They don't want to dump Carla--Diane's always admired her, even when Carla scorned her...

But could Carla ever accept a triangle? Won't she force him to choose one of them? Carla loathes Diane, right?

We'll find out.

NOTES IN THE MORNING

• Diane = looks, brains... desirability. No... Desire!
• Carla = Cynical realist. The Reality Principle! Settle for someone realistic, not who you want! Jealousy, too. The smoldering envy you get when you settled for less.
• Fearing Carla's temper = I placate my rush-to-commit, to settle for anyone, like this side of me is a bully who'll punish my longings for glamor or beauty--or even just high standards.
• But Diane, my desire, wants to coexist with the Reality Principle--she's not trying to keep my dream lover only a fantasy. Delighted to find a lover who meets her high standards and ready to concede whatever it takes, to Realism.
• I feel plain and unsexy, like Carla--so I resent pretty women who can pick and choose. There's a risk I'll avoid sexy dates and settle for blah ones... just as I've settled for blah work and house and friends!
• But AM I really so blah? I need to go for dates I want, no matter how unrealistic, and see if my inner Carla sabotages me. Maybe not. If yes, I must make it clear to Carla that I side with desire; the reality principle is welcome to join us, but I won't restrain desire any more. Who needs realism, if it's just plain mean?
