Recurring dream, late 1980s, by Tracey West
It's often funny what your mind will choose as metaphors in your dreams. Sometimes it's just downright embarassing.
For instance, sometime in the late 1980s I had a recurring nightmare for several months. It went something like this:
I am Mary Ann. I am in Hawaii. The surroundings are black and white. I board the S.S. Minnow with Gilligan, the Skipper, Ginger, the Professor, and Mr. and Mrs. Howell. We set sail. There is a terrible storm. I am tossed about inside the small boat. Then there's blackness.I had this nightmare after graduating college. It probably reflected a fear of being engulfed by the real world without accomplishing anything, or of not being properly recognized for my achievements. That's legitimate, I guess. But Gilligan's Island? Is that the best my poor little brain could come up with?I awake with the others on a deserted isle. The theme song to Gilligan's Island begins to play. The singers get to the end of the song, and instead of singing "The Professor and Mary Ann" like they did in later seasons, they sing "and the rest," like they did before the show got popular. And the rest. And the rest. They sing it over and over.
I always wake up at this point, often screaming.
I haven't had the Gilligan's Island dream in years, but if I ever have it again, I hope I at least get to have sex with the Professor.
