Dipsomania

Dreamed before 1961 by Dick in LA, reported to the Rhine Institute

A young man in Los Angeles after his mother's death found he had inherited not only her objective belongings but also some of her human obligations. Among these was an unfortunate dipsomaniac acquaintance to whom his mother had given help and advice, as he says,

Any number of times after I had long since lost patience with her drinking and other weaknesses. Now she had disappeared after being discharged for drunkenness by the wealthy family for whom she had been working.

Late at night, after notifying the rather listless police, I was at my wits' end and stood resting for a minute on the rail outside the lawn surrounding City Hall. Without thinking, I said aloud, "Well, Mom, I've done my best to find her and now I don't know where else to look. I am very much afraid she will commit suicide, thinking all her friends have left her now that you are gone."

Quite clearly and at once, I heard my mother say, "Why, Dick, she is right over there in that little old hotel."

I wasn't particularly shocked or afraid. Looking over, I saw the little hotel about a block away. I asked at the desk for Mrs. B. She was registered there and came out at once, her face white, and she had been crying. I knew she was about to take her life.

"Dick, how did you ever find out in time I was here?" she asked. I told her that Mother had told me and she smiled and nodded as if she might have known that. You see, she had attempted to drop out of sight from everyone and no one could possibly have known where she had gone after she left the house upon the mountain where she had been discharged.
