I met Sue Averell in fall 2005, out at Hunter's Point Shipyard during San Francisco's Open Studios. I was struck by her loose, squiggly cityscapes, for they seemed more like bird's-eye views than human. On impulse I asked if they were flying dreams and she confirmed that many were, like Six Red Walls. I can't find that piece on her website, but here are two with that same high viewpoint and fast motion.
These may look like pure dashed-off action paintings, but telling details lurk: note the tiny figures busy in their litle termite world far below, and the graffiti on that far-off red wall--QUESTION EVERYTHING. Ha!
